Prof. Mukand S. Babel of Water Engineering and Management participates in 2nd Asia-Pacific Water Forum in Chiang Mai, Thailand

Prof. Mukand S. Babel of Water Engineering and Management (WEM) was invited to deliver a keynote on "Climate Change and Water Crisis in Asia and the Pacific" in the Technical Workshop on "Water Security and Sustainable Water Resources Management: Water Risk and Resilience" organized by K-water of South Korea on the 17 May, 2013 at the 2nd Asia-Pacific Water Summit from 14-20 May 2013 held in Chiang Mai, Thailand. The theme of the forum was "Water Security and Water-related Disaster Challenges: Leadership and Commitment". Prof. Babel presented water security issues and associated risks and how they are exacerbated by climate change from global and regional perspectives and showcased local insights through recent research carried out at WEM/AIT. The concluding remarks highlighted the key challenges for contributing towards a water-secure world.

Prof. Mukand S. Babel also made a presentation on "Technology for Drought Management" at the Technical Workshop on "Technology for Water-related Disasters Management" on the 18 May 2013 organized by the Royal Irrigation Department (RID) of the Royal Thai Government (RTG) at the 2nd Asia-Pacific Water Summit. He also took part in the panel discussion on the subject with other international and national experts from academia and the government, while emphasizing on the potential role of new technologies in monitoring and modeling for drought management. Among others, the resulting discussion recommended in establishing a real time drought monitoring program by a relevant government agency in Thailand. Prof. Babel proposed that AIT can assist in research in advancing our understanding of the dynamical mechanisms governing hydro-climatic variability as well as observing and forecasting droughts on long-term basis, and in the development of decision support system for translating the research into practice, for example, in issuing warnings, assessing risks, and taking precautionary measures for drought management.(Updated: 29 May, 2013)

Riverbank filtration (RBF) water treatment technology for water supply has lot of potential in Asia

Riverbank filtration (RBF) water treatment technology for water supply has lot of potential in Asia, said Prof. Ray in the seminar organized by School of Engineering and Technology on 15 May, 2013. Riverbank filtration (RBF) is a low-cost drinking water treatment technology that has been used for over a century in Europe and more than 50 years in the United States. The RBF systems use a combination of vertical and horizontal wells, located on riverbanks, to induce the river water to flow towards them. Prof. Ray discussed the site suitability for RBF, potential production capacity, and market growth in the United States. He also provided the overview of the operational efficiency of RBF systems to remove pathogens, microscopic particulates, and other dissolved chemicals from a variety of studies. Prof. Ray also posed the research issues that need to be addressed. Finally, he presented summaries of modeling studies dealing with biogeochemical processes involved in riverbank filtration and pathogen filtration.
Dr. Chittaranjan Ray is a Professor in Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at the University of Hawaii, and Interim Director of the Universityís Water Resources Research Center. He is also the Chief Environmental Engineer of the Applied Research Laboratory (of the US Navy) at the University of Hawaii.
